The rules for distant care

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services · Prescribing controlled substances via telehealth. As of October 2026, temporary rules run through December 31, 2026. Authorized prescribers can prescribe certain controlled medicines without a prior in-person exam when required conditions are met; the communication requirements are explained below.

eCFR, Office of the Federal Register / National Archives · 21 CFR 1307.41 — Telemedicine prescribing of controlled substances. A questionnaire or voice call alone does not meet that standard.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services · Licensing across state lines. HHS explains how permission to provide care across state lines varies. This is useful when you’ll be somewhere different for the next remote visit.

Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing · Telehealth Information. Alaska’s licensing division explains telehealth permissions and limited exceptions for out-of-state care. As of October 2026, its guidance bases the rules on where you receive care.
